DJI just turned its enterprise drones into an open AI dev platform. The Enterprise Drone Onboard AI Challenge 2026, announced April 2, invites developers worldwide to build and deploy custom AI models that run directly on the drone — not in the cloud. The hardware combo: the Matrice 4 series enterprise drone plus the Manifold 3, a 120-gram onboard AI compute module packing 100 TOPS (NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX, 60 TOPS GPU + 40 TOPS DLA, 16 GB LPDDR5, 256 GB SSD). IP55-rated, operates from -20 to 50 degrees Celsius, draws just 33 watts.
The Matrice 4 itself is a serious airframe — 49-minute flight time, 21 m/s top speed, 112x hybrid zoom, laser rangefinder to 1,800 meters, and 15.5-mile transmission range. Submissions close May 10, winners announced in June.
Payload SDK V3 + Onboard SDK v5.0
This is what makes it interesting for the agent builders. Manifold 3 runs full Linux and supports DJI Payload SDK V3 plus Onboard SDK v5.0 — developers get API-level control over flight path, gimbal, camera, and sensor feeds. Deploy custom TensorRT or ONNX inference models directly on-board. Real use cases: real-time power line defect detection, autonomous search-and-rescue target identification, precision agriculture anomaly spotting — all processed at the edge, zero cloud latency.
Why Developers Should Care
Most drone AI still means streaming video to a ground station and running inference there. Manifold 3 flips that — your model flies with the drone. At 120 grams and 33 watts, the weight and power penalty is negligible. DJI is essentially handing developers a Jetson Orin NX with full flight control APIs, pre-integrated into a production enterprise drone platform. That combination didn’t exist before at this level of integration.
