Alibaba shipped AI smart glasses. Not a concept, not a dev kit — retail units on sale in China since March 8, starting at 1,899 yuan ($275) for the G1. That’s $100 less than Meta Ray-Ban.
Two models. The G1 is camera-only: Sony IMX681 sensor, 12MP, 109-degree FOV, 3K video at 30fps with AI upscaling to 4K. Five-mic array, bone conduction audio, 40 grams. The S1 adds a micro LED heads-up display at 2,300 nits with diffractive waveguide — real AR territory — running on Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 plus a BES2800 co-processor. Price jumps to 3,799 yuan ($537).
Both models use swappable 280mAh battery cells that hot-swap without powering down. Optional 2,500mAh charging case for road warriors.
What the Glasses Actually Do
Voice-activated via “Hello Qwen” or temple tap. Real-time translation, visual Q&A, navigation. In China the ecosystem integration is deep — order food on Ele.me, hail rides via Amap, shop on Taobao, pay with Alipay, all hands-free. International version planned for 2026 with Spotify, PayPal, and Google Maps integration.
The API Layer — Why Developers Should Care
This is where Alibaba’s glasses diverge from Meta Ray-Ban and Huawei’s new AI glasses. The backend runs Qwen 3.5, and Alibaba’s DashScope SDK is fully open — Python, Java, HTTP, all OpenAI-compatible. You can hit the same model powering the glasses at 0.8 yuan per million tokens. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is supported, meaning developers can plug custom tools and services directly into the Qwen agent pipeline. API access at qwen.ai/apiplatform.
For context, Brilliant Labs Halo goes fully open-source on-device. Alibaba’s play is different — cloud-first, ecosystem-heavy, priced to move volume.
