Xpeng’s IRON is a full-size humanoid robot standing 178 cm tall with 82 active degrees of freedom — 22 per hand alone. It runs on three proprietary Turing AI chips pushing 2,250 TOPS, powered by a VLT (Vision-Language-Tactile) multimodal brain that fuses sight, language, and touch into real-time decision-making. Full solid-state batteries keep it lightweight and safe. Mass production prep started this month, with large-scale manufacturing targeted for late 2026 and a goal of one million cumulative units by 2030.
Commercial deployments will focus on guided tours, shopping assistance, and facility inspection — basically anywhere you’d put a human greeter today, but one that never clocks out.
The SDK Play
This is where IRON gets interesting for builders. Xpeng announced an open SDK at their November 2025 AI Day, giving global developers access to motion control, semantic understanding, and visual recognition APIs. Think of it as Xpeng treating IRON less like a product and more like a platform — third-party devs can add vertical skills, custom dialog flows, and perception modules for specific industries.
For a humanoid robot market dominated by closed ecosystems, an open developer platform is a bold bet. It’s the same playbook that made Android win phones: let others build the apps, you own the hardware layer.
Why It’s Trending Now
April 2026 is IRON’s inflection point — mass production supply chain is spinning up, and the SDK is attracting developer attention in robotics communities. Among Chinese humanoid robots, IRON stands out for raw spec density: 82 DOF, custom AI silicon, and solid-state batteries in one package. If you’re tracking the humanoid space alongside Unitree’s H1 or Figure 03, Xpeng just made the race a lot more crowded.
