Zhipu (now z.ai) just shipped ZCode, a desktop coding agent tuned for its GLM-5.2 model. It topped Hacker News at 260 points. The pitch: this is China’s open-weight camp taking a direct swing at Claude Code.
What it actually is
ZCode is a desktop ADE — think Claude Code, but built around GLM-5.2 and designed for long-horizon work. It crams the goal, files, terminal output, browser context, and Git state into one task, then runs for hours or days. The 3.0 release swapped to Zhipu’s own ZCode Agent core with 20+ built-in tools. The trick nobody else has: trigger a coding task from WeChat, Feishu, or Telegram, and let it grind async while your laptop stays shut.
The API angle
GLM-5.2 exposes an Anthropic-compatible endpoint, so it’s a drop-in backend for Claude Code — same harness, one-sixth the cost. Use case: swap the model, keep your workflow.
Why care? GLM-5.2 scores 62.1 on SWE-bench Pro, top among open weights, trailing Opus 4.8’s 69.2 but beating GPT-5.5. Open weights, MIT license, real numbers.
