Every Composer model Cursor shipped before this was someone else’s brain wearing a Cursor jacket — fine-tuned on Kimi or open-source bases. Not anymore. This week Cursor (Anysphere), fresh off SpaceX’s $60B all-stock acquisition and now folded into xAI, released its first frontier coding model pre-trained from zero. It’s the editor’s agent, and it finally answers to no third party.
What it is
A ~1.5-trillion-parameter model, pre-trained on xAI’s Colossus supercomputer in Memphis — 100,000+ Nvidia GPUs, roughly 10–20x the compute of any prior Cursor run. It lives inside the editor as the agent that already knows your codebase. Alongside it: Origin, a git host built for AI agents instead of humans, and a public iOS beta for driving those agents from your phone.
Why it matters
Owning the model means Cursor stops eating third-party pricing and capability ceilings. The best-informed agent about your repo is now trained by the company that ships the editor. Independent API access isn’t confirmed yet — for now the model is bolted straight into Cursor, not sold as a standalone endpoint.
