Google published google/skills, its official Agent Skills repository — 16,000 GitHub stars and climbing 327 a day. It’s not a product, it’s a surrender flag: the SKILL.md format that grew out of the Anthropic ecosystem is now the standard, and Google is shipping to it.
What’s actually in the repo
Plain Markdown skill packs that teach coding agents to use the Google stack correctly: Gemini API, BigQuery, Cloud Run, Firebase, GKE, AlloyDB, plus “Well-Architected” skills for security, reliability, and cost optimization. Apache 2.0, announced at Cloud Next 2026. Your agent stops hallucinating outdated Cloud APIs because the vendor itself wrote the cheat sheet.
Install it in one command
Run npx skills install github.com/google/skills and the packs drop into Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Antigravity, or Cursor. Typical use case: ask your agent to deploy to Cloud Run or wire up the Gemini API, and it follows Google’s own playbook instead of guessing from stale training data.
The context: mattpocock/skills has 209K stars, addyosmani/agent-skills has 84K. When community repos get that big, platform owners either fight the format or join it. Google joined.
