OpenAI’s commerce play is selling ads inside ChatGPT. Anthropic’s counter: give away the entire commerce agent stack for free. Claude Commerce Agents is an Apache 2.0 blueprint for building shopping and merchant agents, and Shopify president Harley Finkelstein amplified the launch — Shopify already shipped its own implementation on top of it.
Two agents, four industries
The shopping agent searches a live catalog, compares products, fills a real cart, and answers policy questions. The merchant agent handles inventory, pricing, promotions, and campaigns — every write staged behind human approval, nothing touches cards or live listings on its own. Reference implementations cover retail, travel, telecom, and entertainment. Anthropic’s numbers: Claude-powered shopping agents lifted cart size up to 35% and purchase completion 60%.
