AI-Washing Is the New 'Natural': 10 Products Faking It and 5 That Actually Deliver

Somewhere around 2023, 'AI-powered' became the 'low-fat' of software marketing. Slap it on the pricing page, watch the trial signups roll in, and hope nobody asks what the model actually does. We've tested hundreds of tools for this site, and the gap between real AI and AI theater has never been wider. Here's our field guide.

The Offenders: AI on the Label, Not in the Product

We're naming patterns instead of picking on every small vendor, but you'll recognize the types:

  1. The 'AI-powered' calendar app whose 'smart scheduling' is a round-robin rule from 2014. If it were machine learning, it would learn you hate 8 a.m. meetings. It doesn't.
  2. The note-taking app that 'summarizes with AI' by extracting the first sentence of each paragraph. There's no model. There's a regex.
  3. The 'AI-driven' resume builder that's a template gallery with a thesaurus. Every 'AI suggestion' is the same for every user.
  4. The email tool claiming 'AI personalization at scale' that merges {first_name} into a template. Mail merge. It's mail merge.
  5. The 'AI stock photo generator' that's a search engine with a rebrand. Search is useful! But it's not generation, and calling it that is the whole con.
  6. The fitness app with 'AI workout plans' — which are static PDFs shuffled weekly.
  7. The 'AI-powered' CRM insights that just sort your list by recency. Sorting by date is not a neural network, folks.
  8. The chatbot widget on every SaaS site that answers three questions from a FAQ page and says 'I'm sorry, I didn't understand' to everything else.
  9. The 'AI meeting scheduler' that sends the same reminder email regardless of your behavior.
  10. The 'AI writing assistant' browser extension that's a thin wrapper calling a third-party API with no product of its own — and charging you 10x the API cost for the privilege.

None of these are scams in the legal sense. They're just charging a premium for a word.

The Real Deal: 5 Tools That Earn the 'AI' Label

1. ChatGPT (OpenAI). Obvious, but the baseline for a reason. The reasoning models genuinely plan multi-step tasks — we've watched it debug a spreadsheet formula across three back-and-forths. $20/month, and it's the AI everything else pretends to be.

2. Notion AI. The Q&A feature is the sleeper hit: ask 'what did we decide about the Q3 budget?' and it searches your entire workspace and answers with sources. That's retrieval-augmented generation done right, not a gimmick.

3. Grammarly. It's been doing real NLP since before it was cool — context-aware tone and clarity suggestions that no rule-based system could produce. The 2025 AI features are incremental, but the core was never fake.

4. Descript. Voice cloning and text-based video editing are genuine model-driven features that save podcasters and YouTubers hours per episode. Delete a word from the transcript, and it's gone from the audio.

5. Zapier AI. Natural-language automation — describe a workflow in plain English and it builds the zaps — is a legitimate time-saver for non-technical users, not just a chatbot bolted onto a settings page.

The 5-Point AI-Washing Detector

Before you subscribe to anything with 'AI' in the headline, run this checklist:

The uncomfortable truth: a well-built non-AI tool beats a badly-built AI tool every single time. Buy the workflow, not the buzzword.
