Anthropic just bought every chip in SpaceX’s Colossus 1 datacenter. Yes — the same site Elon’s xAI built its empire on. Yesterday’s competitor is today’s landlord.
The Numbers
220,000+ NVIDIA GPUs — a mix of H100, H200, and GB200. 300 megawatts of power. The kicker: the whole thing comes online within a month. Most hyperscaler buildouts take quarters to provision. Anthropic flipped this one in weeks.
It also stacks on top of Amazon’s 5GW commitment, Google’s 5GW TPU deal, and the Microsoft/NVIDIA $30B partnership. Anthropic’s compute mix now spans AWS Trainium, Google TPU, and NVIDIA GPU — three vendors, zero hostage situations.
What Claude Users Get Today
Claude Code’s 5-hour rate limit window just doubled. Pro and Max plans no longer throttle during peak hours. Opus API quotas went up sharply. If you’ve been bouncing off “rate limit reached” mid-debug, that’s gone tomorrow.
Orbital Compute, Seriously
Anthropic and SpaceX are already floating multi-gigawatt “AI compute in orbit” — solar in space, no atmosphere, no NIMBY. Years away. But the fact a frontier lab is putting it on the roadmap with a launch company tells you where the ceiling just moved.
