Mojo 1.0 Beta lands after 3 years: one codebase from CPU to GPU, no CUDA

Modular shipped Mojo 1.0.0b1 on May 7 — the first 1.0-track release of the AI-native language Chris Lattner has been building since 2023. HackerNews put it on the front page within hours: 239 points, 164 comments. Lattner is the same person behind LLVM, Clang, and Swift, so the AI infra crowd actually listens when he ships.

What Mojo actually is

A programming language, not a framework. Python-style syntax, native speed, single source for CPUs and GPUs. The killer demo: GPU kernels without CUDA or HIP, meaning you write performance-critical ops once and run them across NVIDIA, AMD, and whatever heterogeneous AI hardware ships next. Mojo also interops directly with Python, so you adopt it without rewriting your stack.

Why this 1.0 matters

CUDA is NVIDIA’s deepest moat — not the silicon, the software. Mojo is the most credible attempt yet to break that lock. Standard library already open source; compiler slated to open source by end of 2026. The Mojo SDK is the entry point — install, write a .mojo file, target CPU or GPU. Typical use cases: custom kernels, inference runtimes, anywhere PyTorch is overkill but raw Python is too slow.
