Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol Puts Checkout Inside AI Chat

Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard for agentic shopping — the plumbing that lets an AI agent actually complete a purchase, not just recommend one. Announced at I/O 2026, it turns conversations in Search’s AI Mode and Gemini into direct buying, with checkout handled in a few taps via Google Pay.

## A cart that follows you across surfaces

The consumer-facing piece is the Universal Cart: a single cart that works across merchants and across Google’s own surfaces. You can add an item while browsing Search, chatting with Gemini, watching YouTube, or reading Gmail, then check out in one place — or hand off to the merchant’s site to finish. Launch partners include Nike, Sephora, Target, Walmart, Wayfair, and Shopify merchants like Fenty.

## Why it matters

If MCP standardised how agents call tools, UCP is the equivalent attempt for commerce: a shared protocol so any agent can transact with any participating retailer. That’s the missing layer for agentic shopping — without it, every “buy this for me” request dead-ends at a checkout page. UCP-enabled checkout is live in the US, expanding to Canada and Australia, with hotel booking and food delivery named as next categories. Whoever owns the commerce protocol owns a lot of the agentic economy.
