AI agents can already research a trade. Coinbase for Agents, launched June 11, lets them actually place it — connecting assistants like ChatGPT and Claude to a user’s account through Coinbase’s MCP server so the agent can execute crypto trades and move money on your behalf.
## What Coinbase for Agents does
You can tell the agent to rebalance a portfolio, trade along an investment thesis, or give a one-time call on a specific position. It covers spot crypto and derivatives now, with equities and prediction markets planned. Because it runs over the Model Context Protocol, it plugs into the chat tools people already use rather than living in a separate app. For the cautious, the agent can run in a sandbox account instead of touching your main balance.
## Paying with x402
The more interesting piece is payments. Using x402 — an open protocol Coinbase built with AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near — the agent can buy premium research APIs and on-demand compute mid-task, with no login or subscription. That turns an agent into something that can both decide and pay, which is the part most agent stacks still cannot do.
