John Jumper, AlphaFolds Nobel-winning creator, is leaving DeepMind for Anthropic

One of the most consequential AI researchers alive is switching teams. John Jumper, the Nobel-winning co-creator of AlphaFold, said on June 19 he is leaving Google DeepMind after nearly nine years to join Anthropic — one of the biggest talent transfers in a year already defined by an AI hiring war.

## Who John Jumper is

Jumper shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis for AlphaFold, the model that predicted the structures of over 200 million proteins and compressed years of biology and drug research into hours. He is not a generalist executive hire; he is the person behind one of AI’s clearest real-world scientific wins.

## Why the move matters

He hasn’t disclosed his exact role and said he’ll take a break first, but the signal is loud. Anthropic positions itself around AI safety, and top scientists increasingly cite the freedom to work on responsible AI as a reason to move. For Anthropic, landing a Nobel laureate famous for AI-for-science hints at ambitions beyond chatbots — and for DeepMind, losing him is a real dent in the prestige race against OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic.
