OpenAI quietly turned Codex from a coding tool into a general computer-use agent. Record and Replay, shipped June 18 in the Codex macOS app (v26.616), lets you perform a workflow by hand — click here, fill that, hit submit — and Codex watches, then writes the whole thing up as a reusable skill.
What it actually does
No prompt engineering, no scripts. You file an expense or publish a video once, and Codex captures it as a standard SKILL.md file with YAML frontmatter that you can edit later. The recorded skill then runs across Codex, Computer Use, browser actions, or plugins — no re-recording.
Why it matters
The trick is intent-level capture, not coordinate-level. OpenAI routes generalization through its model instead of brittle pixel-position macros, which is exactly what killed every older “record macro” tool. Demonstrate once, the agent generalizes.
It needs Computer Use enabled and a paid plan — Plus ($20), Pro ($200), or Business/Enterprise/Edu — and isn’t live in the EU, UK, or Switzerland yet.
