OpenAI announced on June 11, 2026 it’s buying Ona — the German company most developers still know as Gitpod, the cloud dev environment with 750,000+ users. This isn’t a talent grab. It’s infrastructure.
What OpenAI actually bought
Today’s coding agents die when the session ends. Close the tab, lose the context, start from zero. Ona’s whole business is persistent cloud sandboxes — secure environments where an agent keeps its state and grinds on a task for hours or days, laptop closed. Bolt that onto Codex and you get an agent that doesn’t need you babysitting it.
Why it matters now
Codex hit 5M weekly users, up 400% this year, but Anthropic’s Claude Code plus Fable 5 (June 9) has been eating into developer mindshare. Long-running autonomous agents are the next fight, and the bottleneck isn’t the model — it’s where the agent runs. OpenAI just bought the runway. CEO Johannes Landgraf and the full Ona team fold into the Codex group, pending regulatory approval. Terms undisclosed.
