Every coding agent wants its own API budget. DesktopCommander MCP doesn’t — it runs on the Claude subscription you already pay for. That single fact pushed it to +900 stars today (7.7k total), the fastest-climbing AI repo on GitHub Trending.
What it actually is
An open-source MCP server from Eduard Ruzga (ex-Prezi, ex-Infogram) that turns Claude Desktop into a full dev-and-ops agent: terminal execution with interactive process control, file read/write across text, Excel, PDF and DOCX, surgical code edits, background process management, and instant CSV/JSON analysis. Unlike IDE-bound agents, it touches your entire OS. Guardrails included: audit logs, command blacklists, optional Docker sandboxing.
How to plug it in
Four ways: npx, Smithery, Docker, or manual config. Works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code and Cline — plus Remote MCP hooks it into ChatGPT and Claude on the web. Typical move: point it at a messy folder of spreadsheets and let it run the whole analysis, no IDE open.
Now at v0.2.44 with 37 releases since December 2024. MIT licensed, zero extra cost.
