Three years of “ads would compromise the assistant,” and at Cannes Lions OpenAI said it’s “clearly in the advertising business now.” Ads are live in five countries — US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand — showing up in a reported 49% of US replies and 26.5% globally, placed under answers for Free and Go users. Japan and South Korea are next.
What an advertiser actually gets
A self-serve ads manager that looks a lot like Google Ads: campaign, budget, goal, bulk upload, real-time impression and click reporting. July added Audiences, which takes your own first-party data, and advanced bid adjustments on top of Creative Tools — where ChatGPT generates the ad variants itself and the human only reviews, edits and approves. Entry price dropped from $200K to $50K.
Why this one matters
Targeting, bidding and generative creative in one box is the entire ad stack minus the agency. The AI part isn’t the placement, it’s that the model reads intent straight out of the conversation and then writes creative against it. Google only ever had the second half. OpenAI is projecting $2.5B in ad revenue this year and $100B by 2030 — that number, not the toolkit, is why every AI assistant ends up here.
