Most AI detectors are a coin flip that ruins a real student’s day. Pangram Labs just raised $9M led by Menlo Ventures and shipped two models the same day to argue it doesn’t have to be that way.
What it actually is
Pangram 4 is an AI-detection model (not a chatbot, not a writing tool) that scores text for machine involvement. The pitch is precision: a 0.0041% false positive rate — roughly one wrong flag per 24,000 documents — and it catches humanizer laundering tools 98.83% of the time across 13 popular ones. It also does the thing older detectors can’t: separating pure-AI, AI-assisted, and mixed human-AI writing instead of a single yes/no verdict. Alongside it, Pangram Image landed as a public research preview claiming 99.5% accuracy on internal benchmarks.
The API angle
This is an API product first. Detection runs at $0.05 per 1,000 words, with a $20/month web plan and a Chrome extension for casual users. Typical uses: publishers and marketplaces screening submissions for AI slop, schools vetting essays, and platforms filtering fake reviews before they go live.
Why watch it: as AI content buries the internet, the tools that can prove what’s real become infrastructure — and Pangram is betting the image flood is next.
