xAI shipped Grok Imagine Image 2.0 on August 7, and it’s now the default Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine and the Grok iOS/Android apps. It’s a pure consumer image model for now — xAI says API access is coming soon, with no developer pricing announced.
Editing is the whole pitch
Most image models compete on prettier one-shot generations. Image 2.0 bets on control after the shot: a magic wand that changes only the region you tap, segmentation for precise selections, background removal with transparent output, smart resize that recomposes the image for any aspect ratio instead of cropping, and multi-reference input that eats up to 5 images in a single generation — no manual compositing.
Second place, one specific rival
As of launch day, xAI claims #2 worldwide on both the Text-to-Image and Image Edit Arena leaderboards. The only model above it on both: OpenAI’s gpt-image-2. The image race has collapsed into a two-horse contest, and xAI is betting the gap closes on editing precision, not raw aesthetics.
One catch: it’s paywalled. Generating on Grok now requires X Premium or a SuperGrok plan (~$30/month).
