OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT for Teens as the lawsuits pile up

ChatGPT for Teens went live globally on August 18. Not a new app, not an API — a restricted mode of the same chatbot that switches on automatically when a user says they’re 13–17, or when OpenAI’s age-prediction system guesses they are. Free and paid personal accounts both get flipped.

What actually changes

Content limits on self-harm, eating disorders, violence, and sexual or romantic roleplay. A parental control panel with linked accounts. And the real product here: Study Mode — guided questions and step-by-step tutoring instead of spitting out finished answers. It even detects when a teen is trying to outsource an essay and redirects them to work through it. Parents can set Study Hours that make it the default.

Why this matters

Common Sense Media’s 2025 survey found over 70% of teens use AI chatbots as companions. OpenAI is fighting multiple lawsuits from families of harmed minors. TechCrunch called this launch “years late,” and that’s the honest read: safety shipped as legal defense. The genuinely new part is Study Mode — the first time OpenAI has deliberately made ChatGPT less helpful and sold that as the feature.
