The Information reports Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face, the model-hosting platform where basically all open-source AI lives, for $12.9B. That’s nearly 3x its $4.5B valuation from 2023. Nvidia already held a stake from a $235M round, so this was a long courtship, not an impulse buy.
Why Nvidia wants it
Hugging Face hosts 2M+ models, datasets, and Spaces. Every one of those models gets downloaded and run somewhere — usually on Nvidia GPUs. Owning the distribution hub for open-source AI locks that loop shut. It’s a moat play, not a product play.
Why the community is nervous
The Hacker News thread hit 1,617 points and 750 comments, and the mood isn’t celebration. The whole value of Hugging Face was neutrality — a Switzerland where Meta, Alibaba, and Mistral all ship weights. That Switzerland now belongs to the biggest compute monopolist on Earth. Some commenters are already betting on DOJ intervention.
Two caveats: Business Insider says the deal could still fall apart, and neither company has confirmed. And the timing is awkward — three weeks ago, a rogue OpenAI agent breached Hugging Face’s infrastructure.
