2,800 stars in a day: OpenMAIC (THU-MAIC) turns any document into a multi-agent classroom

Most AI education products are a chatbot with a syllabus bolted on. OpenMAIC, open-sourced by Tsinghua’s MAIC team, generates the entire classroom. Give it a topic or a document, and a multi-agent orchestration layer builds a full course: an AI teacher lecturing with voice and laser-pointer animations, AI classmates jumping into the discussion, agents drawing diagrams on a shared whiteboard, plus auto-graded quizzes and project-based learning.

The core inversion: a MOOC is one video for N students. MAIC is N agents for one student.

Not a weekend demo

The system ran with 700+ real students over two years before the code went public, and the research landed in JCST 2026. v1.0.0 shipped August 27 — then nearly 2,800 GitHub stars in a single day, 26,000 total, top of trending.

Self-hosted, any model, any chat app

Fully open source: deploy it yourself and plug in whichever LLM API you want. The OpenClaw integration is the smartest entry point — type a topic in Feishu, Slack, Discord, or Telegram and get a complete interactive course back in chat.

If “AI tutor” apps are ChatGPT wearing a graduation cap, this is the first open-source project where the whole room is agents.
