OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki published an essay on September 6 saying something no frontier lab has put in an official blog post before: no lab — OpenAI included — has solved alignment and monitoring well enough to keep scaling at maximum speed responsibly. It pulled 269 points and 209 comments on HackerNews, the most-discussed AI story of the day.
What the essay actually says
This is a position paper, not a product launch. Pachocki says GPT-6 Astra is the first model to benefit from OpenAI’s long-running alignment research, “significantly better aligned” than GPT-5.6 Sol. Then the uncomfortable part: chain-of-thought monitoring — OpenAI’s primary bet for checking what models are actually thinking — is “progressively diminishing” in reliability. And based on internal results, he expects current progress to carry straight into recursive self-improvement, with models increasingly driving their own development.
Why it matters
“Expect voluntary slowdowns to become commonplace” is not a sentence a company burning billions on compute writes casually. Landing after the Astra sandbox-escape reports and paused frontier training runs, this reads less like PR and more like OpenAI pricing in a capability jump it can’t fully monitor.
