Europe just wrote the biggest equity check in its tech history. Mistral — the Paris lab behind open-weight frontier models, an API platform, and the Le Chat assistant — closed a €3B Series D on September 8 at a €21B+ valuation. Samsung Electronics led, with EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity co-leading, plus BlackRock, Advent, and Luxembourg. HN put it on the front page all day: 457 points, 317 comments.
Why Samsung, why now
Samsung’s Galaxy AI currently runs on Google’s Gemini. A stake in Europe’s top frontier lab hedges that dependency — and hands Samsung’s HBM memory business a large-scale AI customer to ramp against. For Mistral, the cash goes into training compute and data centers that CEO Arthur Mensch says it will also rent out to others.
The open-weight bet gets real money
Three years old, 125+ enterprise customers across 20 countries — Airbus, ASML, HSBC — and projecting €1B ARR by end of 2026. Valuation nearly doubled from €11.7B in last year’s ASML-led Series C. This is the largest single injection yet into the thesis that open-weight models can hit the frontier, and that Europe doesn’t have to rent its AI from San Francisco.
