The Information dropped this on May 8: Meta is quietly building a consumer AI agent codenamed Hatch. It plugs straight into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads — that’s roughly 3 billion users of distribution before it even launches. See something in a Reel? Tell Hatch to buy it. Need food, a Reddit thread, an Outlook reply? It’s already been tested in sandbox environments for DoorDash, Reddit and Outlook.
Inside Hatch
A consumer-grade agent — Meta’s answer to Anthropic’s OpenClaw. The strange part: right now it runs on Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6. Meta plans to swap that out for its own Muse Spark model once it’s ready. For the moment, Anthropic is powering Meta’s biggest agent bet — an interim arrangement that won’t last.
Why it matters
This is the first credible OpenClaw competitor with real distribution. OpenAI’s agents have no social graph. Anthropic ships to developers. Meta has 3 billion users, native checkout flows, and Reels as the discovery layer. A separate agentic shopping assistant inside Instagram is targeted before Q4. The race for the consumer agent layer just got serious.
