Anthropic shipped Claude For Legal on May 12 — its first true vertical product, aimed straight at the most lucrative slice of enterprise AI.
What it actually is
It’s an agent layer, not a chat wrapper. Twelve practice-area plugins ship at launch: M&A, employment, litigation, privacy, commercial counsel, and seven more. Over 20 MCP connectors wire Claude into the tools lawyers actually use — Harvey, Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis, DocuSign, Legora. The cross-app integration puts one context-carrying Claude inside Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint, so the agent remembers your Word redline when you switch to Outlook to send it.
This is the part Harvey doesn’t have: a single agent across the whole legal stack, not a separate copilot per app.
The MCP play matters
Plugins ride on Claude’s MCP connector framework, which means any vendor can extend Claude For Legal by shipping an MCP server. Niche jurisdictional databases, billing systems, discovery tools — none of it needs Anthropic’s blessing to plug in. The plugin shelf is open by design.
Anthropic also partnered with Free Law Project and the Justice Technology Association on an access-to-justice initiative. Legal AI was Harvey’s town. There’s a real second player now.
