Google just rebranded Android. At The Android Show I/O Edition on May 12, 2026, Google’s product VP said it out loud: “We’re moving from an operating system to an intelligence system.” That sentence is the whole strategy. Gemini Intelligence is the new name for everything Gemini does on your phone, and it ships this summer on the latest Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, then watches, cars, glasses, and laptops by year-end.
What it actually does
It’s an on-device agent layered over Android. Gemini reads your screen, takes multi-step actions across apps, auto-fills forms, summarizes web pages, and generates custom widgets from a plain-language prompt. The new Gboard feature, Rambler, takes your rambling voice input — pauses, self-corrections, filler words, even mid-sentence language switches — and turns it into a clean message. No tapping. No editing.
Why it matters
Apple’s AI revamp is still on a slow boil. Google just defined what “AI phone” means for the next 12 months, and it gets to push it to 3 billion Android devices. Paired with the new Googlebook laptop line, this isn’t a feature launch — it’s Google front-running the entire post-smartphone interface before Cupertino catches up.
