Vercel Labs released Open Agents on May 9 — an open-source template for building cloud-based AI agents on Vercel’s serverless infrastructure. It isn’t a new framework swinging at LangGraph head-on. It’s a starter kit that turns the Vercel AI SDK into a real agent stack with one repo clone.
What you actually get
A clean reference implementation of an agentic system designed to run on Vercel. Streaming responses, tool calling, persistent state — all wired into the AI SDK that millions of Next.js developers already ship with. Deploy is one vercel deploy away. It started trending on GitHub the week of launch because the agent template space is dominated by heavyweight abstractions, and Open Agents reads like a real production codebase you can fork on day one rather than a research toy.
Why this matters in the framework war
The cloud-agent template space already has LangGraph, AWS Bedrock AgentCore, Google ADK, OpenAI Swarm. None of them ship with Vercel’s distribution. With Open Agents, Vercel is quietly moving its AI SDK from “LLM client library” to “agent platform” without forcing developers to leave the Next.js stack they already live in. That’s leverage no other vendor in this category has.
