Gemini Spark leaks 5 days before I/O: Google’s agent might buy things without asking you first

Google’s next AI agent got pulled out of Google app beta 17.23 on May 14, five days before I/O 2026 opens. It’s called Gemini Spark. Internally it was “Gemini Agent” until someone in marketing presumably decided that sounded too robotic.

What Gemini Spark actually does

Spark is Google’s pitch at the “everyday AI agent” — one that lives inside the Gemini app on your phone and runs stuff in the background without waiting for prompts. The leaked onboarding lists the obvious chores: clean up your inbox, unsubscribe from newsletters, summarize meeting context, book a flight, operate any site you’re already logged into. To do that it pulls from your location, your chat history, your connected apps, and your saved sessions. Spark holds the cookies so workflows can keep going while your phone sleeps.

The “no second confirmation” line everyone’s screenshotting

Buried in the same onboarding screen is the part that lit up Twitter: Spark may share your information or make purchases without asking. Google labels the whole thing “experimental” and moves on. That’s the bet — OpenAI’s Operator and Anthropic’s Computer Use both pause for human approval before anything irreversible. Google is betting users will trade that friction for speed.

Why it matters

This is the third major-lab swing at a general computer-use agent in six months, and Google’s the only one putting it in a consumer app most people already have installed. Anthropic still owns careful approval gates. OpenAI owns macOS desktop sessions. Spark’s edge is distribution and Project Mariner’s DOM-aware browser stack underneath. No public API has surfaced yet — expect Google to gate it behind AI Pro when Sundar shows it on May 19.
