OpenAI just put Codex inside the ChatGPT mobile app. Open Codex on your Mac, hit pair, scan the QR with your phone — now your iPhone is a live cockpit for whatever Codex is doing on the host. Approve commands, switch models, eyeball diffs, watch terminal output, scan test results. Files and credentials never leave the laptop.
What it actually is
Not a new model. A workflow upgrade for the existing coding agent. Codex already runs long-horizon tasks in the background — refactors, full test suites, repo-wide edits — and waits for a human to babysit each step. Until today, that meant chaining yourself to the Mac. Codex Anywhere pushes the babysitting layer to your phone. The agent keeps running on your machine or devbox; the approvals live in your pocket.
Why it matters
Codex hit 4M weekly users without ever leaving the desk. Moving the control surface to mobile is OpenAI’s bet that coding agents are now long-running enough to need a real dashboard, not just an IDE tab. The phone, not the editor, becomes the universal interface for an agent that runs anywhere else. Preview rolled out May 14 in all supported regions. iPhone, iPad, Android work today. Windows comes next.
