Anthropic made it official on May 7. The Excel, Word, and PowerPoint add-ins went GA, and Outlook entered public beta — all on existing paid Claude plans, no extra per-seat license like Copilot needs.
What it actually is
It’s an agent, not a chatbot widget. Claude runs as a sidebar across four Office apps with one shared conversation thread. Change assumptions in an Excel model and the linked PPT deck and Word memo update against the same context. Get an Outlook email — open it as a Word draft. Cross-app memory is the real differentiation, the thing Copilot still does in fragments. Excel users can flip between Sonnet 4.5 for speed and Opus 4.6 for harder analysis. Mac and Windows both supported on day one.
Why it matters
First time Anthropic goes after Copilot’s home turf with a comparable product story, not an API-only play. Enterprise can route Claude through Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex, or Microsoft Foundry — data residency and consolidated billing already handled.
For developers, the API surface is the M365 add-in itself: build agents that read the active worksheet, write back formulas, generate slides from a brief, or draft Outlook replies with full doc context. The use case isn’t “summarize this email” — it’s an analyst loop where one prompt touches three apps.
