$2.7B to bring him back, gone in 20 months: Noam Shazeer leaves Google DeepMind for OpenAI

This isn’t a product launch — it’s a hire that moves the frontier. On June 18, Noam Shazeer announced he’s leaving his job as Gemini co-lead at Google DeepMind to join OpenAI. Sam Altman called it a hire “10 years in the making.”

The number that stings: Google paid a reported $2.7B back in 2024 to license Character.AI and bring Shazeer back as VP of Engineering. Less than two years later, he walked.

Why this matters

Shazeer co-wrote “Attention Is All You Need,” the 2017 paper that gave us the Transformer — the architecture under every major model today, including the one that wrote this. He’s credited with helping Gemini close the gap on ChatGPT. Now that brain is on the other side.

A real brain-drain

He’s not alone. John Jumper (AlphaFold, Nobel laureate) left DeepMind for Anthropic in the same window. Fortune is openly asking whether Google can stay at the frontier. The talent war isn’t cooling — it’s deciding who wins.
