Microsoft is collapsing two Copilots into one. Come August 2026, the consumer Copilot and the enterprise Microsoft 365 Copilot become a single app — same identity, capabilities that flex based on your subscription and data permissions. Low-use features like Copilot Podcasts get cut. This is Microsoft’s answer to the AI super app race Anthropic and OpenAI already started.
From chatbot to background agent
The real shift is AutoPilot. A Copilot waits for you to ask; an AutoPilot doesn’t. Microsoft Scout, the first one shown at Build 2026, is an always-on desktop agent (Windows 11+ and macOS 12+) running under its own Entra identity. It summarizes email, manages your calendar, drives a browser, and runs commands in the background on a schedule you set. Plus a beefed-up coding assistant.
Why it matters
Merging apps is housekeeping. The signal is Microsoft betting the whole Copilot brand on agents that act on their own, not chat windows you type into. Third giant, same wager: the assistant should do the work, not answer questions about it.
