Write on the page with your pen. The ink slowly fades, as if the paper drank it. A second later, a reply writes itself back in flowing cursive, stroke by stroke. That’s Riddle — the enchanted diary from Chamber of Secrets, except the thing answering you is Claude.
What it actually is
Riddle isn’t a chatbot with a skin. It’s a Rust app for the reMarkable Paper Pro, the e-ink writing tablet. It snapshots your handwritten page as an image, ships it to Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5, and animates the response back onto the screen in longhand. Replies start appearing in about a second, writing before the model has even finished thinking. No keyboard, no chat bubbles — just paper that talks back.
Why it’s blowing up
467 points on the Hacker News front page, 817 GitHub stars, and it’s open-source, so anyone with the tablet in developer mode can build it. The model isn’t the magic here — the form factor is. Vision LLM plus e-paper’s physical feel makes a demo that hits harder than any web UI. This is the “AI + hardware” pitch made real: same intelligence, radically different body.
