Remember the scene in Chamber of Secrets where Harry writes in Tom Riddle’s diary and the ink gets swallowed, then the book answers? Maxime Rivest built exactly that — as a real device.
What it actually is
Riddle isn’t an app or a chatbot window. It’s a mod for the reMarkable Paper Pro, a physical e-ink writing tablet. You write a note with the stylus. The page “drinks” your ink, the words vanish, and a reply flows back onto the screen in animated handwriting. Under the hood it’s a Rust app that snapshots your page, sends it to a vision LLM — Claude Fable 5 in the build Rivest shipped — and streams the answer back as strokes.
Why it’s blowing up
467 points on Hacker News, 817 GitHub stars, and coverage jumping from HN to Android Authority and Notebookcheck. The AI part is ordinary; the magic is the form factor. No glowing rectangle, no typing — just paper that talks back. It’s the clearest recent demo of what “AI plus a new hardware shape” can feel like.
