Anthropic just moved Claude Cowork — its breakout agent product — off your machine and into the cloud. Announced July 7, rolling out in beta to Max subscribers first, with more plans in the coming weeks.
Cowork is an agent that does real multi-step work: research, files, the office tasks you hate. One problem: it only ran locally. Shut the lid, work stops. That was the single biggest gap between agent demos and agents you actually delegate to.
What changed
Tasks now execute on Anthropic’s infrastructure. Sessions and files follow you across devices, jobs run in the background or on a schedule, and your phone becomes the approval button when the agent needs a human call. Anthropic is also merging Claude chat and Cowork into one space with shared files, and extending doubled usage limits through August 5. Monthly Recap and API key expiration settings shipped the same week.
Why it matters
This is Anthropic’s answer to OpenAI’s background-agent push. The whole point of an agent is delegation, and delegation that dies with your Wi-Fi isn’t delegation. “The work continues while you’re offline” is the feature that makes agents feel like coworkers instead of chatbots.
