ChatGPT Google Drive Library + macOS Computer History: OpenAI turns the chatbox into a desktop context layer

Two shipped features, one direction. On August 14 OpenAI put Google Drive inside ChatGPT’s Library — browse Drive files and folders in the sidebar, @mention one into a chat without re-uploading, keep a Doc, Sheet or Slide open side by side while ChatGPT summarizes or rewrites it. Boring on its own. Useful every day.

Computer History is the real move

The macOS desktop app can now reference what you actually did on your Mac. Not screenshots — Computer History logs interaction events through macOS accessibility APIs: clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts, app switches, sites visited. That timeline becomes memory ChatGPT and Codex can read, so you stop re-explaining context you already built. It replaces Chronicle, the earlier screenshot-based experiment.

Opt-in, off by default, Pro/Business/Enterprise only, unavailable in the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Admins gate it for teams. You can pause it, pick which apps count, delete timeline items.

Why it matters

A model that reads your Drive and your desktop history is a different product from a chatbox. It’s an ambient context layer competing with Apple, Microsoft and Google on their own machines. Security researchers already flagged that the local activity files aren’t encrypted — expect that fight to grow.
