Voice is the real product
The usage shape matters more than the number. 63% of users talk to Gemini instead of typing. One in five Gemini Live sessions shares a live camera feed or screen — pointing a phone at a broken faucet or a homework problem. More than 150M images generated daily, plus automated task execution across 40+ apps. This stopped being a chatbot a while ago; it’s a voice-first, camera-fed assistant that happens to have a text box.
What developers get
The same models sit behind the Gemini API and Gemini CLI — multimodal input, function calling, agentic workflows in the terminal. Worth remembering the 1B counts app users, not API calls.
One number Google left out: paid subscribers. ChatGPT hit the same line in June 2026.
