Anthropic opened the first research preview of the Anthropic Model Hardware Standard (MHS) on August 27 — a protocol that lets AI agents safely operate physical equipment: microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms, anything with a programmable interface. Think USB-C, but between agents and machines.
The pain it kills: wiring an agent to lab hardware today means weeks or months of bespoke integration per device, with no standard safety layer. MHS makes devices discoverable and standardizes control, cutting that to hours.
The early numbers are the story
At Genentech, an agent ran a drug-discovery experiment with real-time error correction. At HHMI Janelia, an imaging experiment that normally takes weeks finished in a day. Another test had an agent calibrating lasers on a quantum computer.
Model-agnostic, MCP-native, open-source later
MHS isn’t a Claude-only moat. Any agent harness plugs in through standard protocols like MCP — your existing agent stack drives hardware without custom SDK work. Anthropic will build safety evaluations with research, robotics, and manufacturing partners first, then open-source the whole standard.
MCP won agent-to-software. MHS is the same bet on agent-to-atoms, and it’s Anthropic’s first real move into physical AI.
