Google’s video generation and editing model went GA on August 27, and the pricing is the real story: $0.03 per second for 360p, $0.10 for 720p, $0.15 for 1080p, $0.30 for 4K. A 360p draft mode runs 60% faster than 720p at a third of the cost — iterate cheap, upscale once.
What’s new in 1.1
Scene extension now analyzes the last 10 seconds of an existing video before continuing it, in 10-second chunks up to 40 seconds total. You can pin start and end frames, interpolate between two images, and feed in 3 seconds of reference footage to carry a character or motion style across shots. One caveat: 1080p and 4K are upscaled, not natively generated.
The API angle
It’s live in the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, plus Flow and the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Calls take extend, image_to_video, and resolution parameters, so the obvious pipeline is draft variants at 360p in a loop, render the winner at 4K. Scene extension is rolling out to Gemini subscribers globally.
Sora and Runway still sell subscriptions. Google is selling video by the second — that’s the price war move.
