What took down ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok at the exact same time?

At 10:58 AM ET on September 3, ChatGPT started throwing 404s. Within minutes, Claude and Grok followed. Three direct competitors, run by three different companies, dead simultaneously — that has never happened before. Downdetector curves for all three spiked in lockstep, Gemini wobbled too, and Hacker News threads piled up 600+ points (the ChatGPT thread alone hit 315).

The prime suspect: shared plumbing

Nobody rents each other’s servers, yet everyone died together. Early evidence points to a shared dependency — Cloudflare and Azure both showed elevated errors at the same time. OpenAI pushed a fix in about 30 minutes; Claude’s Opus models were the last to come back. The timing stings for OpenAI: this hit right before the expected Astra launch, which Polymarket gives a 59% chance of shipping by September 15.

Why it matters

The entire developer world runs on three APIs, and those three APIs apparently run on the same pipes. Every coding agent, every AI startup, every “AI-powered” feature went dark at once. Multi-model failover used to be an enterprise checkbox. As of this week, it’s table stakes.
