OpenAI launches Deployment Company with $4B from TPG, Bain, and 17 others — buys Tomoro for 150 forward-deployed engineers

OpenAI just spun out the OpenAI Deployment Company — a majority-owned subsidiary that drops specialized engineers directly inside enterprises to build complex AI systems. Launched with $4 billion of initial investment at a $10 billion pre-money valuation.

## The cap table

19 global investment firms, consultancies, and system integrators are in. TPG holds the lead position. Advent, Bain Capital, and Brookfield round out the co-lead founding partner group. OpenAI retains majority control of the subsidiary, so customer relationships and IP stay within the OpenAI orbit even as the consulting arm operates semi-independently.

## The Tomoro acquisition

DeployCo’s first move: acquiring applied AI consulting and engineering firm Tomoro. That brings approximately 150 experienced forward-deployed engineers and deployment specialists onto Day 1 — an instant senior team rather than two years of hiring.

## Why it matters

Frontier model labs have been bottlenecked at deployment: enterprises buy ChatGPT licenses but can’t operationalize them past pilots. Anthropic launched its own consulting joint venture a few weeks ago. OpenAI’s $4B response is the most aggressive shift toward “we will physically deploy this for you” in AI history. Expect Microsoft Consulting and the Big 4 firms to react in the next 90 days.
