Hystax launched OptScale AI, extending its open-source FinOps platform into the harder problem its enterprise customers have started flagging: not cloud cost, but LLM cost — and the loose-cannon agents racking it up.
## Gateway, guardrails, and governance
The core piece is an AI Gateway that routes requests between local and public LLMs depending on the task, which Hystax claims can cut AI costs by up to 40%. Sitting alongside it are Security and Guardrails for content controls applied at every interaction, plus observability and governance for the agents themselves. The platform spans both local and public LLM environments — meaning it can also sit between an internal model and a frontier API, deciding which call goes where.
## Why it matters
Enterprises started 2026 worried about AI capability and are ending it worried about AI bills, sprawl, and accountability. Most teams have no idea which agent called which model, for whom, or whether the response was safe. A FinOps vendor extending into this gap is the predictable move: cost optimization for LLM calls looks a lot like cost optimization for cloud spend — observe, route, enforce. The interesting twist is bundling that with agent governance, treating “what did the agent cost” and “what did the agent do” as the same control plane.
