Google Expert Intelligence (Gemini Notebook × Play Books) turns 100,000 paid books into AI sources

Google shipped Expert Intelligence on August 27. It’s not a new app — it’s a feature inside Gemini Notebook: any ebook you bought on Google Play Books can now be added as a source, and every answer stays grounded in the book’s actual text. The full Notebook toolkit works on it too — infographics, Audio Overviews, quizzes, study plans.

The copyright design is the real story

100,000+ books at launch, from Macmillan, O’Reilly, Bloomsbury, Penguin Random House, and Johns Hopkins University Press. The clause that got publishers on board: you must own the book. Share a notebook with someone, and they get prompted to buy their own copy before querying it. That makes this the first time a big AI company plugged licensed paid content into an AI product as a trusted source — a distribution deal disguised as a feature. Publishers get a new sales channel; Google gets clean content nobody can scrape.

Where it goes next

US users get one free book at launch. Google says the same pipe extends to the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, then to third-party subscriptions, textbooks, and research reports. RAG over pirated PDFs was everyone’s hack. Google just made the legal version a product.
