EU orders Google to open Android to rival AI agents — ChatGPT and Claude get Gemini-level access

The European Commission ruled this week under the Digital Markets Act: Google must give rival AI assistants the same Android access Gemini enjoys — apps, system services, all of it. This isn’t a product launch, it’s regulation deciding product distribution: who gets to be the default brain on every European Android phone.

What actually opens up

Eleven Android features. Rival assistants get “Hey Google”-style voice activation, can book taxis, control apps, and tap system-level services. Most changes must land by August 1, 2027. A separate order forces Google to share anonymized search data with rival engines and chatbots starting January 2027 — the data moat, drained by decree.

Google is furious. Global affairs chief Kent Walker says the decision “risks undermining vital privacy and security guardrails for millions of Europeans.” Translation: Google doesn’t want OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity living rent-free at the OS level.

Why this matters

A regulator just treated system-level agent access as an antitrust essential — a first. Until now, Google decided which agent gets into Android. Security teams are already asking a new question: which AI agents should hold device permissions at all? That fight starts now.
