Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s longtime CTO, takes over all of Google’s AI research and operations — including Gemini development — as SVP, reporting directly to Sundar Pichai. Note the title: not CEO. DeepMind no longer gets one. Hassabis becomes chairman of Google DeepMind and Alphabet’s Chief Scientist, focusing on the “big picture” — corporate language for stepping out of the chain of command. Sebastian Borgeaud, who leads Google’s AI coding effort, also relocated from the UK to California.
Why it matters
This isn’t a product launch; it’s an org rewiring that decides how fast Gemini ships. Hassabis spent a decade keeping DeepMind semi-independent in London. That’s done — every leader driving Gemini now sits in Mountain View, running on the same clock as OpenAI and Anthropic. Wall Street read it as risk rather than focus: Alphabet dropped about 4% on the news.
