OpenAI shipped the ChatGPT Apple Messages Plugin (macOS) on August 20. It’s an agent, not a chatbot trick: ChatGPT can read, search, and summarize your iMessage/SMS/RCS history, then draft and send replies for you — inside ChatGPT Work and Codex modes. All tiers including free. Apple Silicon only.
What it actually does
Dig up an old conversation, catch up on a group chat you ignored for a week, fire off a reply. Sending needs your confirmation by default — enable persistent approval and that last check disappears. Processing happens locally, and no full message index gets built.
Why the privacy fight started within hours
The catch: it demands Full Disk Access, and that permission doesn’t stop at Messages — it also covers Mail, Safari history, and Time Machine backups. iMessage’s end-to-end encryption doesn’t help; the plugin reads the decrypted local database. The bigger story: an AI assistant just became an operating layer across system apps, and OpenAI planted that flag on Apple’s own turf before Apple did.
