Two of the big three music publishers just sued Anthropic in the Northern District of California — and they didn’t stop at the company. CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann are named personally. This is news, not a product launch, but it hits every AI lab training on scraped data.
What the complaint says
Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell allege Anthropic torrented pirated books from Library Genesis, scraped lyrics from MusixMatch and LyricFind, and trained Claude on tens of thousands of compositions — “Livin’ On a Prayer,” “Hallelujah,” “September,” “Eye of the Tiger.” They want up to $150,000 per work plus $25,000 per stripped copyright notice. Do the math: multi-billion territory. Mann’s internal note calling Library Genesis “sketchy AF” is Exhibit A for willfulness.
Why this one matters
It’s the fifth music lawsuit against Anthropic — after UMG/Concord’s $3B+ suit over 20,000 songs, BMG, and Round Hill. Anthropic already paid $1.5 billion to settle with book authors over the same torrenting. The publishers’ argument: that settlement was just “the cost of doing business.” Naming executives personally is the escalation — it makes piracy-sourced training data a personal liability problem, not a corporate line item.
