Claude Tag update: Anthropic’s Slack agent now reads the whole conversation — and decides when to shut up

Anthropic pushed a major update to Claude Tag, its always-on AI teammate for Slack. The old version scored each message with a lightweight classifier, one at a time. The new one ingests the entire conversation — the back-and-forth, links, files, people — then picks one of four moves: reply inline, spin up a thread, route the message into an existing workstream, or say nothing. Anthropic claims this makes it roughly 30% better at judging when to jump in, and when not to.

Ambient mode: no @ required

Turn on the opt-in ambient mode and Claude Tag stops waiting to be tagged. It flags stuck threads, follows up on forgotten tasks, and surfaces relevant context from across the org. The team clearly knows the risk here — their own line: “an annoying agent is worse than an unhelpful one.” Restraint is the feature.

Why this matters

Every enterprise agent bolted onto Slack answers when called. A shared teammate with persistent memory that decides for itself when to speak is a different category — and a sensitive new boundary. One detail worth watching: the expanded context doesn’t count toward usage limits “for now.” Anthropic wouldn’t commit on future billing. Available in beta for Claude Enterprise and Team customers.
