Hermes Agent hits 240K GitHub stars — Nous Research built an agent that actually learns

Every AI agent on the market wakes up with amnesia. Hermes Agent, the open-source autonomous agent from Nous Research, is the first with a real learning loop: it writes its own skills after finishing complex tasks, iterates on them during use, persists what it learns, and full-text searches its memory across sessions. Launched February 2026, it’s now at 240K GitHub stars — still adding nearly 800 a day. MIT license.

An agent that grows instead of resets

The pitch isn’t “agent that does tasks” — plenty of those. It’s the closed loop: experience becomes skills, skills get curated and consolidated automatically. It also spawns parallel subagents, runs cron jobs, and answers you from CLI, Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, or Signal. Post-OpenClaw, this is the hottest open personal agent, and the self-improving angle is why.

Self-host it for $5

Fully open source and self-deployable. Point it at Nous Portal, OpenAI, OpenRouter, or your own model backend — 300+ models supported. A $5 VPS keeps it alive 24/7; serverless deploys cost near zero when idle. Typical setup: an always-on assistant that runs your morning-report cron and replies on WhatsApp while your laptop sleeps.
